HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS
The Harlem Hellfighters were an African-American infantry unit in WWI who spent more time in continuous combat than any other American unit, with 191 days in the front-line trenches. They also suffered more casualties than any other American regiment, more than 1400. Many white US soldiers refused to serve with Black soldiers, so the Hellfighters instead fought with the French army.
The extraordinary courage, sacrifice and dedication to the country of the Harlem Hellfighters earned them fame in Europe and America. After the war, the French government awarded the coveted Croix de Guerre to the entire unit. In February, 1919, New Yorkers of every race turned out in huge numbers to cheer as 3000 Harlem Hellfighters proudly marched in a victory parade up Manhattan's Firth Avenue.
