President Lincoln at The Battle of Antietam, 1862

Abraham Lincoln used the occasion of the Antietam victory to issue his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which would free all slaves not residing in Union-controlled territory. The battlefield became a national military park in 1890, and jurisdiction passed to the National Park Service in 1933.
