Storm Thorgerson "Feathers for Syd"

STORM THORGERSON

Feathers for Syd

Thorgerson is best known for creating the greatest rock music album covers of all time for Pink Floyd. He also created the art for albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, Yes, Phish and many more. His art was noted for placing objects out of their traditional contexts, especially with vast spaces around them, to give them an awkward appearance while highlighting their beauty.  He suffered a stroke and was then diagnosed with cancer, which eventually led to the death of this legendary art genius in 2013.

Syd Barrett is the legendary co-founder of the band Pink Floyd. He named the group and was the original lead singer, songwriter and guitarist. He left Pink Floyd in 1968 amid speculation of mental illness and excessive use of psychedelic drugs. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd in 1996. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.

As a tribute to Syd, Thorgerson described it like this "Firstly, to be vivid and colorful to reflect Syd's creative imagination. Secondly, to be varied and diverse, which is why there are illustrations to all his songs, and thirdly to hint at the darker, sadder side of Syd's life, hence the mirror which is not a mirror, the feather trees of autumn, and the escaping swan, breaking free from the confines of upbringing and education"
