In Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, October 15, 1988, Gibson was called in to pinch hit at the bottom of the ninth inning after initially being kept out of the lineup due to injuries to both legs. With two outs, he hit a two-run, walk-off home run again Oakland Athletics pitcher Dennis Eckersley. The home run won the game for the Dodgers with a final score of 5-4.
