HENRI MATISSE (1869 - 1954)
Blue Nude, 1952
Matisse is a leading figure in modern art. Known for his own expressive language of color, and fluid and original draughtsmanship, his prodigious body of work spanned over a half-century. For Matisse, painting was the rhythmic arrangement of line and color. He created the technique of striking contrasts, unmixed hues, flat planes of color and expressive brush strokes.
Renowned artist Richard Diebenkorn said of the artist, "Matisse always surprises me; it's the restraint coupled with the sensuousness that's so utterly exceptional."
