Nelson began his professional career as an artist publishing his work through Dreamworks studio, where he served as the lead conceptual artist for Steven Spielberg's "Amistad” and "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. His work has been displayed by Sports Illustrated, Coca-Cola, The United States Postal Service and Major League Baseball. In 1999, Nelson began to collaborate with several notable authors on a series of picture books including Debbie Allen, Deloris and Roslyn Jordan, among others. Nelson won a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, a Caldecott Honor and an NAACP Image Award for his work in Carol Boston Weatherford's MOSES: When Harriet Tubman Led her People to Freedom”.
