90pts James Suckling "Complex aromas of flint, licorice, aniseed and sliced lemon follow through to a medium to full body, steely palate and a fresh finish. Crisp yet creamy texture."
90pts Wine Spectator "Fresh and aromatic, evoking lemon verbena and lemongrass flavors that are juicy and refreshing, with a touch of salted lime and fresh-grated ginger, while pear and yuzu notes linger on the finish."
An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.
In 1994, Sue and her late husband Greg White took shelter during a looming hurricane season in a Marlborough harbor at the top of the South Island. Stunned by the beauty of the area, they decided to drop their anchor in the safe haven and officially establish the Whitehaven Winery. Today, Whitehaven offers Sauvignon Blanc that is entirely grown, crafted, and bottled in Marlborough and certified sustainable by the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand organization.
